Craftspeople glued thin strips of varied natural timbers together into block patterns, which were sliced horizontally to produce identical repeating veneers.

Makers utilised native British timber species including oak, holly, yew, sycamore, walnut, and plum wood. Craftspeople largely avoided synthetic stains, using the natural colour contrasts of the different wood species to form geometric patterns.
