English Fusee Dial Clock with a Carved Mahogany Surround. circa 1880.

19th century
For Sale by M. C. Taylor
Description

An attractive and unusual late 19th century 'English Dial' wall clock.

The 8 day duration, gut fusee movement with Anchor Recoil escapement and rectangular plates.

Behind a cream coloured, 11" visible, flat painted iron dial with outer divided minute track, triangular hour points and inner, Roman hour numerals. Having blackened steel hands the hour of which is 'trefoil' in shape. The dial is under a cast brass, hinged bezel with flat glass and silvered sight ring.

In a mahogany case with the usual pegged back box that has a side access door and also, a curved and cockbeaded door to the rounded bottom. The one-piece surround is attractively carved in acanthus leaf style and is of great colour and patina.

Dimensions: 17" wide and high x 6" deep.

Condition: The movement is overhauled but not restored therefore, carries a full guarantee - it has been cleaned, had wear removed, new line fitted and the escapement is set correctly. The dial is restored well and the bezel is good with a pleasing look of age to it as does the case. The case has been historiacally repaired and shows signs of wear, a crack to the surround (see Photograph) and shrinkage however, the French polished surface is original and of excellent colour and patina which serves well to show its antiquity - it would be a great shame to restore it and lose the original finish. None of the carving appears to be damaged or missing. The case is sound and over all, this is a good, original wall timepiece.

Price: The price is for the clock in guaranteed condition.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A fusee dial clock is a spring-driven clock incorporating a cone-shaped pulley (the fusee) connected by a chain or cord to equalize force as the mainspring unwinds. Popular throughout 19th-century Britain in commercial and public spaces, these clocks were celebrated for accurate timekeeping and prominent circular dials.

Traditional Victorian dial clocks typically feature a solid timber surroundfrequently mahogany, oak, or walnuthousing a heavy brass mechanism. Dials were historically painted sheet iron set behind a protective glass front within a brass bezel.

Authentic 19th-century English fusee clocks feature a heavy brass movement held together with screwed or pinned pillars, a visible winding hole on the dial face, and a conical fusee drum inside. Period-correct pieces typically display hand-finished timber surrounds and cast brass bezels rather than stamped modern metal components.

Position a dark mahogany dial clock as a focal anchor above a hallway console, side table, or chimneypiece to contrast with clean architectural lines. The bold Roman numerals and dark timber frame bring historic depth to modern neutral colour palettes.

Keep mechanical wall clocks level and free from direct heat or humidity fluctuations to preserve the movement and wood casing. Clean the timber with a soft dry cloth and microcrystalline wax, avoiding water or chemical polish on the original painted dial face.
