Antique Sarouk Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

Beautiful rich jewel toned antique Sarouk rug, with amazing variations in the dye and older than most Sarouk rugs, woven around 1900-1910.  A well drawn traditional floral Persian design with orange/red dyes that change through-out and change to lighter shades.  Known as abrash, the Persian term for dye change, this is the charm of an antique rug.  Deep royal blue dyes used for the border and hints of green and golds too.  Sarouk's were woven in the village of Saruk in the Arak region of Persia.  In good pile all over with some old marks in a couple or areas, it has been washed by our workshop and ready to be used.

Sarouk rugs have been produced for much of the 20th century. The early successes of the Sarouk rug are largely owed to the American market. From the 1910s to 1950s, the "American Sarouk", also known as the "painted Sarouk", was produced.  American customers had an affinity for the Sarouk’s curvilinear and floral designs. What they did not appreciate, however, was the colour, so for much of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, rugs exported from Persia were dyed to a desirable, deep, raspberry-red colour, once they arrive in the USA.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sarouk rugs are hand-knotted textiles originating from the Arak region in western Iran. They are recognised for their thick wool pile, floral spray patterns, and characteristic deep terracotta red or navy fields.

These carpets are crafted using durable hand-spun wool knotted onto a dense cotton warp and weft foundation. The asymmetrical knot technique creates a compact, resilient pile designed for longevity.

Authentic pieces feature dense, high-quality wool knotting, floral designs that float without connecting vines, rich vegetable dyes displaying natural colour variations known as abrash, and a flexible yet heavy feel.

Place the rug as a unifying foundation in a living area, dining room, or library. The rich terracotta and dark blue tones anchor spaces with neutral walls or complement dark timber furniture.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating beater bar to avoid pulling fibres. Rotate the rug annually to balance sun exposure and foot traffic, and treat spills immediately by blotting with a clean cloth.
