Fine Pair of Regency Mahogany Hall Chairs

19th century
For Sale by Holmes Antiques
Description

A rare and fine quality pair of Mahogany Hall Chairs of fabulous rich colour and patina from the early 19th Century. Well drawn and nicely carved with heraldic coat of arms with a Camel carved to the centre rising from a Coronet with the letter P below. Surrounded with reeded border and sitting above reeded C scrolls with flowers, the seats both made from one solid piece of Mahogany. The Chairs are strong and heavy made from the finest exported timbers of the period. A Camel on a family crest symbolises temperance, patience and perseverance. Thanks to the skills of Christopher Coles a provenance researcher we can say that these Hall Chairs almost certainly relate to the Pepys family and are most likely to be a branch of the family related to the great diarist Samuel Pepys. The Manor at Ridley Hall was sold to the Pepys family in 1700, they also had property in London.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency hall chairs are non-upholstered wooden accent chairs designed during the early 19th century specifically for entryways and foyers. They were constructed without fabric padding to prevent damage from wet coats, often featuring carved or painted armorial crests on the backrest.

These chairs were typically constructed from dense, high-grade hardwoods such as mahogany or oak. Features include solid timber seats, turned or sabre legs, and hand-carved backrests with reeded borders.

Authentic pieces from the Regency era feature hand-cut joinery, solid wooden seats without upholstery tack marks, and period-appropriate features like reeded edges or turned front legs. The presence of painted or carved family crests on the back panel is also indicative of the era.

Position a pair on either side of a hallway console table or in an entryway to establish symmetrical balance. Their compact proportions and deep timber tones complement modern minimalist walls while adding historic texture.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth along the grain of the wood. Protect the original finish by applying a thin coating of beeswax polish annually, avoiding direct heat sources and silicone Sprays.
