Tunbridge ware is a traditional form of decoratively inlaid woodwork that originated in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, during the seventeenth century and reached peak popularity in the Victorian era. It features complex mosaic imagery formed from hundreds of tiny timber tesserae.

Makers constructed Tunbridge ware using various natural, un-dyed native and imported hard woods such as boxwood, holly, walnut, yew, and rosewood. The natural variations in wood grain and shade created the detailed pictorial and geometric patterns.
