Description

A rare and unusual vernacular Windsor style stick chair in oak and ash, dating from the early 19th century, with a slab seat, stick back, and simply turned supports to the armrest. The seat is unusually deep, quite narrow and is very comfortable (if you are slim of hip, which makes me think it was probably made for a man!) The chair is completely original and has the most fantastic finish and patina.

This chair is an absolutely stunning piece of vernacular furniture in completely original condition. We believe (though aren’t totally certain) that it originates from the West Country - if anyone has any opinions about its origins please do get in touch as I would love to know for sure. It has a great outline and has real presence. I especially like the shape of the armrests, and there is a very sweet little timber collar where the side stretcher joins into the rear leg that must have been added at the time of construction to make the joint secure. It has its original stained/painted finish which has worn away beautifully were handled, and developed a great patina elsewhere.

Condition: Excellent original condition, very solid with no wobbles or loose joints.

A vernacular Windsor chair is a traditional regional form of seating where the back spindles and legs are socketed directly into drilled mortises in a solid wooden seat, rather than joining to continuous corner posts.

These chairs were commonly crafted using a combination of native hardwoods, such as elm for the shaped seat, ash or yew for bent components and spindles, and beech for turned legs and stretchers.

Authentic period examples feature hand-turned or hand-shaved timber elements, wedged tenon joinery visible through the seat, natural wear patterns on the front stretchers, and deep hand-carved seat profiles.

A Windsor armchair functions well as a standalone accent chair in an entryway, alongside a writing desk, or integrated with modern dining furniture to create texture and historic contrast.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting.
