Good Walnut Longcase Edward Stanton

19th century
Description

A superb burr walnut and walnut longcase clock with 10in. brass and silvered dial engraved Edward Stanton London. The later case is a bespoke 20th century cabinet in the finest burr walnut which has a wonderful colour and delightful patina and is in excellent condition throughout and is raised on solid walnut bun feet in the William & Mary style. The dial has decorative pierced brass spandrels with two cherubs holding a crown aloft and a silvered roman chapter ring. This has a matted centre with ringed winding holes and subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture. The face is flanked by barley twist columns to the door with a handsome carved crest above with swan neck, central shell, flower head and leaf frieze surmounted by a water gilded ball finial. The two train movement has an anchor escapement that runs beautifully keeping good time. This strikes on a bell on the hour every hour striking only once at twelve o’clock. The figured burr line inlaid waist door has a lenticule panel for viewing the pendulum in motion and the base is raised on pretty, petite bun feet. This has a working lock and key with good quality brass weights and brass covered pendulum.

The hood is glazed to the sides to allow viewing of the movement.

The clock has very nice neat proportions measuring 209cms high 37 cms wide by 23 cms deep.

UK insured delivery can be arranged with our trusted furniture courier and costs £75 plus vat to most destinations.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A longcase clock, commonly known as a grandfather clock, is a tall, free-standing, weight-driven pendulum clock housed in a wooden case. First developed in the late 17th century, these timepieces represented a major advancement in horological accuracy due to the deadbeat and recoil escapement mechanisms.

Early longcase clock cases were constructed from native hardwoods such as oak, frequently veneered with figured walnut, olive wood, or intricate marquetry. The dials were typically composed of cast brass plates with silvered chapter rings, cast brass corner spandrels, and hand-forged steel clockworks.

Authentic period longcase clocks display hand-finished movement components, square or arched brass dials with cast spandrels, and age-appropriate wear on weight lines and pulleys. Furthermore, authentic timber cases exhibit historical cabinetmaking techniques such as hand-cut dovetails and original veneer patination.

A walnut longcase clock serves as an architectural focal point when positioned in an entrance hall, formal reception room, or library. Placing the piece against a neutral or dark paint backdrop allows the figured wood grain and gilded brass dial to contrast with modern furnishings.

Keep the timber case away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, applying microcrystalline wax sparingly to preserve the finish. The movement requires periodic professional servicing, including cleaning and re-oiling by a qualified horologist every five to seven years.
