A Delightful and Extremely Attractive Superb Quality Late 18th Century Italian Giltwood Wall Mirror

19th century
Description

A Delightful And Extremely Attractive Superb Quality Late 18th Century Italian Giltwood Wall Mirror, In The Florentine Taste, Having Elegant Profusely Carved Frame, Incorporating Carved Giglio Decoration, Enclosing Old Bevelled Mirror Plate, With Robust Original Panelled Back.

This fabulous 18th century Italian giltwood wall mirror is the perfect size to fill a whole variety of different size spaces and settings around the home and comes with an incredibly elegant carved frame.

All things considered it is in excellent condition, with just a few old repairs and of course the expected scuffs and scrapes. More often than not however mirrors of this design have been left battered and bruised with many, many repairs and missing pieces so in our opinion its great to find one that has clearly been as well loved as this.

The mirror plate itself is old, but possibly not 18th century as the condition is a little too good for that, despite various old marks and ageing. There is also a possibility that the carved frame itself started life designed to hold a painting, only to be relatively quickly converted into the attractive wall mirror which we find today, as that is extremely common for mirrors of this design.

A couple of other features we really like are the really solid panelled back, which is rarely found in later 19th century examples and is a real sign of quality and of course the apparent giglio carved decoration, which of course is a symbol of Florence.

It’s also worth noting that the mirror is designed in such a way that it will happily hang portrait or landscape, which of course significantly enhances the available functionality of this piece.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Italian giltwood mirrors from the late 18th century showcase elaborate hand-carved woodwork covered in gold leaf, drawing inspiration from Late Baroque and Rococo architectural traditions.

Craftsmen carved dense timber or softwoods, applied a smooth gesso base prepared with animal glue, and layered thin sheets of gold leaf, often finished with punchwork and selective burnishing.

Authentic period pieces feature irregularities from hand-carving, natural gilding wear revealing red or grey clay bole beneath, and age-related wood shrinkage on the reverse structure.

Position the mirror above a contemporary console table or fireplace mantel to create a focal point that contrasts historic hand-craftsmanship against clean, minimalist lines.

Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water, chemical polishes, or damp cloths which dissolve the delicate water-gilded gesso substrate.
