Tidy Oval Sutherland Table Late 1800s

19th century
For Sale by Limited Editions
Description

This late 1800s walnut Sutherland table is a good shape with the demi lune drop leaves and is in nice tidy condition. Showing very little signs of useage on the top it has had a little tidying in the past and we have rewaxed it upon arrival in our workshops. It has an unusual gallery between the supports and the well turned slim legs. This drop leaf table is priced really keenly and rather less than the nice quality and good overall condition might suggest.

The depth is 19cms closed and 95 open. A useful table that takes minimal space closed but offers a reasonable surface open. Really priced to sell.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Named after the Duchess of Sutherland, this style of narrow drop-leaf table emerged during the mid-Victorian era, designed specifically as a compact, space-saving surface for serving afternoon tea.

These tables are traditionally crafted from solid mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, featuring narrow central tops, hinged rule-joint leaves, slender turned legs, and brass castors for ease of movement.

Authentic period examples feature hand-turned double legs on pivoted gates, rule joints along the drop-leaf hinges, period-correct ceramic or brass castors, and original timber joinery beneath the top.

Positioned beside a sofa or in an alcove, the leaves can remain folded to minimise floor space or opened fully to display table lamps, books, and decorative objects.

Clean surfaces with a soft, dry cloth, apply a high-quality beeswax polish along the wood grain twice a year, and position the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement.
