Victorian overmantel mirrors were designed specifically to sit above fireplace mantels, featuring low horizontal bases and ornate upper frames. They often incorporate Neoclassical, Rococo, or French revival motifs such as crests, scrolls, and gilded plaster detail.

These mirrors were constructed with a softwood frame coated in gesso and plaster composition mouldings, which were then finished with gold leaf gilding over a reddish bole clay ground.
