A Fine Regency Rosewood Work Table

19th century
Description

A fine Regency dropleaf work table in rosewood, the rectangular top with banded edge and with brass and boxwood stringing, with a stylised floral motif to the centre of each side, over opposing fitted drawers with corresponding dummy front, each with original turned wooden handles, oxbone lock escutcheon and boxwood edge, over a sliding work basket lined with baize and with pleated rose silk covering, with end supports united by a stretcher and on splayed legs, all with brass stringing, raised on hairy paw feet with castors. English, circa 1820.

Condition: Excellent, the table is in very good condition, all the brass inlays are present and have been lightly cleaned where appropriate, the drawers both have a key and run smoothly, the castors roll well and overall the piece has a stylish appearance with wonderful colour and patina, with beautifully figured timber. Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Regency work table is a small, specialised piece of early 19th-century furniture originally designed to hold needlework, embroidery tools, and crafting supplies. Popular during the Georgian and Regency eras, these tables typically feature drawers, side drop leaves, and a fabric-lined basket or trough beneath to store textiles.

Regency sewing tables were frequently crafted from high-grade exotic timbers such as rosewood, mahogany, and satinwood. Construction often incorporated intricate brass or boxwood inlay, brass castors, and pleated silk or cotton fabric for the lower work basket.

Authentic Regency examples display hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original brass toe caps or castors, distinct grain pattern variations in exotic veneers, and period-appropriate lock escutcheons. The presence of a pleated work basket suspended from a sliding wooden frame beneath the drawers is also a key identification feature.

Due to its compact footprint and decorative silhouette, a Regency work table functions effectively as an occasional side table beside an armchair or sofa. It can also serve as a distinctive nightstand or a decorative accent piece within a hallway or alcove.

Keep rosewood furniture away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent veneer cracking and wood fading. Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, apply natural beeswax sparingly, and gently vacuum the fabric sewing basket using a low-suction brush attachment.
