A late Regency rosewood pembroke work table attributable to Gillows. Original turned handles and gilded brass castors, mahogany lined drawers and finished to the reverse. Pull out slide has a later mahogany panel rather than than the silk bag. C1825.

Originating in Britain during the eighteenth century, the Pembroke table was designed as a light, versatile piece of occasional furniture. Typically featuring two hinged drop leaves and shallow drawers, it served various daily functions ranging from tea service to needlework and writing.

Nineteenth-century Pembroke tables were primarily constructed from solid mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, often adorned with flame timber veneers. Cabinetmakers employed hand-cut dovetail joints for the drawers, wooden or brass drawer knobs, and turned legs supported by brass cup castors.
