Whytock & Reid Mahogany Chest of Drawers

1900 - 1920
Description

Fantastic mahogany chest of drawers with concaved front and glass top by Scottish furniture maker Whytock & Reid. An arrangement of 2 short drawers and 2 long drawers with oval embossed handles. All drawers run smoothly, are constructed with hand dovetail joints and decorated with delicate string inlay. A solid set with incredible colouring and amazing graining with only minor marks / scuffs in line with age and use. This is a striking example of period furniture offering a lot of storage space and history to any home.

Established in 1807 by Edinburgh businessman Richard Whytock, the furniture-making firm became ‘Whytock and Reid’ when he formed a partnership with John Reid in 1876.

Whytock earned his first warrant from Queen Victoria in 1838 and the recognition of their craftsmanship.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Queen Anne style chests of drawers are characterised by proportions emphasizing restrained form, incorporating features such as cabriole legs, pad feet, and brass handles. Originating in the early 18th century, this design focuses on curves and highlighted wood grain rather than heavy surface carving.

Quality mahogany chests typically feature solid wood frames with flame mahogany veneers, hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer linings, and cast brass hardware. The internal framing frequently utilises secondary timbers such as oak or pine for structural support.

Identification relies on examining structural details, such as irregular hand-cut dovetails, maker stamps or labels, original brass fittings, and drawer runner wear. The presence of natural timber oxidisation and age-consistent surface marks also assists verification.

A dark mahogany chest serves as a grounding visual piece when paired with neutral wall paints, contemporary lighting, and modern ceramics. Placing contemporary artwork above the piece creates a balanced contrast between traditional craftsmanship and current interior trends.

Dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and applying high-grade beeswax polish periodically helps preserve the timber finish and lustre. Keeping the piece away from direct radiator heat and direct sunlight prevents veneer cracking or uneven fading.
