Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Neoclassical wall lights, particularly from the Louis XVI period in France, are characterised by symmetrical compositions and classical motifs inspired by Greco-Roman antiquity. Common design elements include ribbon bows, quivers of arrows, torches, floral swags, and leaf acanthus carving, departing from the asymmetrical scrolls of the earlier Rococo style.

Traditional giltwood appliques were hand-carved from hardwoods such as linden or pine, coated with layers of gesso, and finished using water gilding with fine gold leaf over a clay bole base. Candle arms were often constructed from hand-forged iron or cast brass integrated into the carved timber frame.

Authentic period giltwood pieces display fine hand-carving tool marks on the reverse and natural wear to the gilding where the underlying reddish or grey clay bole shows through. Genuine examples often feature historical joinery, minor shrinkage splits along timber grain lines, and signs of conversion from original wax candle sockets to later wiring.

A pair of ornate sconces works effectively when positioned symmetrically to frame a central architectural element, such as flanking a chimney breast, a large mantle mirror, or an framed artwork. Placing them above a sideboard or console table creates a balanced focal point while adding warm accent lighting to ambient dining or living spaces.

Giltwood should be dusted gently using a soft, dry ostrich feather duster or an artists camel-hair brush to prevent flaking. Liquid cleaners, damp cloths, and chemical solvents must be avoided entirely, as moisture dissolves the underlying gesso and permanently damages fragile gold leaf coatings.
