A Very Fine Regency Bracket Clock by Berguer of the Strand, London.

19th century
Description

The epitome of Regency elegance and style in the form of an ebonised Chamfer Top bracket clock.

The majority of bracket clocks in this style were normally veneered in rosewood and mahogany. This particular example is veneered with fruitwood and then finished with many layers of black ebonised polish.

The 8 day movement features a strike/silent mechanism, repeat and the hours are struck on a single bell.

The white painted dial is beautifully signed by the maker John Berguer of the Strand (London). The Berguer Clockmaking family were originally based in Switzerland.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency bracket clocks were produced in Great Britain during the early nineteenth century, characterised by clean architectural lines, neoclassical brass ornamentation, and dark timber finishes such as ebonised fruitwood or mahogany.

These clocks typically feature cases constructed from fruitwood or mahogany finished with black ebonisation, accentuated by cast brass finials, handle drops, and feet, along with brass fusee clockwork mechanisms.

Authentic Regency bracket clocks feature original twin-fusee movement construction, hand-engraved or painted dials often signed by London clockmakers, period-correct brass moulding, and appropriate age-related oxidisation.

A bracket clock serves as a focal point when placed atop a stone mantelpiece, dark wood sideboard, or library desk, pairing effectively with contemporary artwork and traditional architectural features.

Dust the ebonised case gently with a soft dry microfibre cloth, avoid harsh chemical polishes, keep the movement serviced by a qualified horologist, and place the clock away from direct sunlight and radiators.
