19th Century Victorian Carved Mahogany Desk

19th century
For Sale by FB Antiques
Description

Selling is a top quality, unusual mid-Victorian copy of a Chippendale carved desk. The top drawer of the desk, when opened, reveals a rising writing panel and two lift up panels with storage beneath. All of these panels have a green leather insert with gold tooling. Beneath the top it has three drawers, all with very nice brass Chippendale style "swan neck" handles. The top drawer when opened is stamped by the side of the lock with Frank Giles & Co Kensington. The locks were made by Hobbs & Co founded in 1852, and then in 1855 traded as Hobbs, Ashley & Co. Either side of the drawers, the cupboard doors have ornate Chippendale style carving. The cupboard on the right hand side is fitted with three small drawers, and the left hand cupboard is fitted with a shelf. A very unusual decorative and practical item.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian carved mahogany desk dates from the 19th century and is characterised by dense mahogany wood, intricate hand-carved ornamentation, and robust construction suited for study or office environments.

These pieces were crafted primarily using solid mahogany or rich mahogany veneers, complemented by hand-cut dovetail joints, cast brass handles, and solid oak or pine secondary woods for drawer linings.

Authentic pieces feature crisp hand-carved relief work, uneven hand-cut dovetail jointing on drawers, original cast brass hardware, and natural timber patination consistent with age.

Position the desk as a focal piece in a contemporary home office or study, balancing its dark visual weight with neutral walls, modern desk lamps, and understated minimalist accessories.

Dust regularly using a soft dry cloth, apply a high-quality beeswax polish along the grain annually, and keep the wood away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent drying.
