The Corinthian order originated in ancient Greece during the late 5th century BC and became the most ornate of the classical architectural orders. Characterised by intricate acanthus leaves and scrolling volutes, Corinthian capitals were extensively used throughout Roman architecture and later revived during the Renaissance and Neoclassical eras.

Architectural capitals were traditionally hand-carved from solid hardwoods such as oak, pine, or walnut, or carved from stone. Wood capitals often featured layered gesso undercoats finished with gold leaf gilding or polychrome paint treatments to highlight the detailed relief work.
