The Woman with the Soul Stirring Eyes, Paris Ca 1930 Art Deco Period Spanish Drawing on Paper

1920 - 1940
Description

A bewitching art deco period drawing by Spanish artist Martin Echegaray Garcia (1901-1957), depicting a woman with soul stirring eyes. Dating from 1929/30, the work was painting shortly after Etchegaray's arrival in France.

The artist was born in Vigo in Galicia as the son of a wealthy businessman: his father owned an island! While his family was probably not too happy with Martin's career choice, young Martin managed to enter the San Fernando School of Fine Arts, where he studied until 1927. In 1924 he participated in the Galician Art exhibition at the Ateneo de Vigo and in 1926 in the Galician Art exhibition in Santiago. Over time, it became clear that he had a special gift for drawing and etching. He received a scholarship to travel and work in Italy, and then settled in Paris in 1929.

He participated in the Parisian Salons d'Automne from 1931 to 1934, the Tuileries Salons of 1932 and 1933 and in the 4th Exposition of the Artistes Independents of 1933. In 1932 he also showed landscapes from Montrouge at the Carmine Gallery, while in 1933 Etchegaray had one man shows at the Parisian galleries Mona Lisa and Gerbo.

Our drawing is signed and situated Paris at the lower right. Measuring 40.5 x 29.5 cm at sight, the overall framed size is 54 x 42 cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco drawings from 1930s Paris often combine expressive figurative draftsmanship with modern linear simplification. Artists in this period incorporated influences from European Avant-Garde movements, capturing human figures with stylized shading, confident contouring, and emotional depth.

During the 1930s, artists frequently used charcoal, graphite, conte crayons, and diluted ink washes on woven or laid paper stock. These dry and fluid media allowed for rapid tonal shading, rich contrast, and expressive mark-making.

Authentic period drawings display natural age-related toning, subtle foxing, or paper oxidisation consistent with early 20th-century paper manufacturing. Examination of artist signatures, inscriptions, medium application, and provenance documentation further assists in verification.

A monochrome figurative sketch can be framed in a slim dark wood or gilt frame with an acid-free mount. It functions effectively as a focal piece on a gallery wall, above a mantlepiece, or within a minimalist contemporary setting.

Paper drawings should be framed behind UV-filtering glass using conservation-grade, acid-free mats to prevent discolouration. Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and high temperatures to protect charcoal and graphite particles from degrading.
