Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century maritime watercolours are defined by accurate technical depictions of rigging and hull structures alongside atmospheric renderings of sky and sea. Artists frequently employed fluid washes to capture light, spray, and changing weather conditions.

Artists used water-based pigments applied to heavy cotton or linen rag paper. Frames were traditionally constructed from timber with carved or moulded gesso finishes and finished in leaf guilding.

Authentic period pieces exhibit age-appropriate paper tones, such as minor foxing or light toning, along with period-correct vessel architecture and hand-drawn rigging details. Signatures, inscriptions, or artist initials are often found near the lower margin.

Maritime artwork pairs well with neutral backdrops, natural timber finishes, and woven textiles in contemporary coastal or traditional schemes. Grouping smaller framed seascapes together on a gallery wall creates a cohesive focal point.

Watercolours should be displayed away from direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading. UV-protective glass and acid-free archival mounting materials help protect the paper substrate from degradation and discolouration over time.
