In the 1820’s James Shoolbred started his company in London. James Shoolbred & Co sold textiles, carpets and other items for interior decorating. In the 1870’s the company was designing and producing original, high-quality furniture, inspired by the aesthetic qualities of E.W. Godwin’s architecture. The furniture was sold in-store and also featured in the James Shoolbred & Co catalogue, which was circulated outside of London. Within another decade the company expanded and moved into a larger location in London, becoming one of the first department stores. James Shoolbred furniture was always displayed and photographed alongside the textiles, carpets and lamps that the company also sold, creating an example interior design for customers to view.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Prominent in late 19th-century British entryways, these pieces served the dual purpose of organising wet outdoor gear and demonstrating household style upon entering the home.

Craftsmen typically used dense hardwoods such as oak or mahogany, paired with cast or stamped brass rails and removable zinc or brass drip trays.

Authentic pieces often feature stamped registration marks or metal makers plaques from James Shoolbred & Co., along with high-quality joinery and fitted metalwork.

Position the piece near an entrance or within a hallway alcove to serve as a functional accent for walking sticks, umbrellas, or rolled architectural prints.

Apply natural beeswax to the timber components annually, and clean the brass tray periodically with a dry, soft cloth to preserve the developed patina.
