Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the nineteenth century, hall stands were designed for grand entrance halls to store coats, hats, walking sticks, and umbrellas. They served as functional storage solutions while simultaneously displaying wealth and decorative taste to visiting guests.

Traditional hall stands from this era are typically constructed from solid quarter-sawn oak, featuring hand-carved relief panels, mortise and tenon joinery, bevelled glass mirrors, and cast metal or zinc drip trays for umbrellas.

Authentic pieces display signs of hand-carving rather than modern machine moulding, natural age-related patina, original mercury-backed or silvered mirror glass, and period-correct metal fittings or umbrella inserts.

Position the piece against a neutral or deep moody painted wall to highlight the carved relief work. Combine it with minimalist modern lighting and contemporary flooring to create a striking contrast between historical craftsmanship and clean modern design.

Dust the detailed carvings regularly using a soft bristle brush or microfibre cloth. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber, and ensure moisture in umbrella drip trays is wiped away promptly to prevent timber damage.
