Fine Quality George III Oak 8 Day Brass Dial Longcase Clock

18th century
Description

A fine quality George III period oak and mahogany cross banded 8 day longcase clock with engraved brass and silvered dial by William Winstanley of Wigan c.1770. The stylish well proportioned figured oak case with swan neck pediment to the hood, lacquered glass panel sat below. Turned columns either side of the glazed door with original glass, long door with shaped top to the trunk; reeded quarter columns set to the sides. Moulded waist below with crossbanded base section to match the trunk door, moulded plinth to the foot with small ogee bracket feet below. The eight day movement with anchor escapement and bell striking on the hour, sat behind a superb quality engraved brass and silvered dial, the centre with scroll design engravings and unusual hour glass engraving. Subsidiary seconds dial to the dial centre and concentric calendar marking the date to the inside of the silvered chapter ring. Bears the makers name Winstanley, Wigan to the dial. William Winstanley is recorded as making clocks in Standish Gate from the 1770's and traded in that name well into the late Victorian period as retailers of clocks and barometers. This excellent example is presented in superb condition, the movement fully overhauled and working, the case with a rich colour and polish. Measures 21" maximum width at hood (trunk width 14") x 9" deep at hood x 86" high.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
