Description

A 19th Century Imari Vase.

The vase with a raised collar, over the ovoid body tapering to a raised foot rim. The collar and shoulders decorated with flowers and reserves filled with scenes of villages and flowers, set against a blue ground. The main body decorated with a profusion of flowers and foliage, whilst the foot rim is decorated with flowing scrolls.

Date circa 1850.

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramic wares produced in the Arita region from the 17th century onwards, named after the port of Imari from which they were shipped.

Traditional Imari porcelain utilises high-fired kaolin clay, decorated with underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze enamel pigments, predominantly iron-red and orange tones.
