Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Ormolu candelabras were prominent lighting fixtures in 19th-century French interiors, prized for their ability to reflect candlelight across opulent reception rooms. The term ormolu refers to the application of finely ground high-carat gold to a bronze or brass object via mercury gilding.

Craftsmen cast individual structural components in bronze or brass using lost-wax or sand-casting methods. These components were subsequently hand-chased with steel tools to define fine detailing, mercury-gilded, and assembled using threaded rods and steel pins.

Authentic pieces feature heavy cast metals, fine hand-chasing, and natural wear patterns where the gilding has worn down to the underlying brass or bronze. Looking at the interior or underside reveals hand-cut threads, square nuts, and age-appropriate oxidation.

Positioning a grand metal candelabra on a contemporary sideboard, mantelpiece, or dining table provides a striking textural contrast against minimalist plaster walls or dark timber surfaces.

Maintain ormolu by dusting gently with a soft dry brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive polishes, liquid metal cleaners, or water, as chemical treatments can strip the delicate original gold layer.
