Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A drop dial clock is a type of pendulum wall clock featuring a circular dial face set above an extended lower wooden trunk. Popularised in Britain during the Regency and Victorian eras, these timepieces housed mechanical pendulum movements while incorporating a drop case to accommodate the length of the pendulum.

These clocks typically feature flame mahogany or oak cases adorned with brass brass inlay, decorative side ears, and cast brass bezels. The dial is usually painted sheet iron marked with Roman numerals, enclosing an internal mechanical movement crafted from brass plates and steel arbors.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut movement plates, hand-painted metal dials signed by historic makers, and natural age-related patination on the wooden case. Key construction details include brass stringing inlays, side access doors for pendulum adjustment, and cast brass bezels.

Position the clock as a focal point on a neutral or dark painted accent wall in an entryway, hallway, or home office. The dark mahogany timber and brass details contrast well against contemporary plaster finishes and minimalist joinery.

Position the clock away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the mahogany timber from drying or warping. Dust the case gently with a soft microfibre cloth, apply beeswax sparingly, and ensure the internal movement is lubricated by a professional horologist every three to five years.
