This exquisite mid-19th-century oil painting by Danish artist Georg Emil Libert (1820-1908) depicts a beautiful view of Sortedam Lake, Copenhagen.
Algae clings to grasses, which protrude through mottled water. While overhanging branches reflect a shimmering likeness, broken by pockets of silver. A figure hurries through the wood. A flash of brilliant white among foliage.
Libert’s masterful handling renders this leafy vignette with extraordinary attention to detail. Note the variety of carefully observed tones, which provide clear, but subtle, distinction - even when trees overlap. And the majestic treatment of the water’s surface with its abundant complexity. A mini-masterpiece by this academy-trained luminary.

Georg Emil Libert was an accomplished Danish landscape painter particularly known for his grand naturalistic depictions of Jutland and Bornholm.
