Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian toilet mirror, also known as a dressing table mirror or swing mirror, is a free-standing mirror designed to sit atop a dressing table or chest of drawers. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these pieces feature an adjustable swivelling glass plate supported by turned upright posts mounted to a wooden plinth base that frequently contains small drawers.

19th-century toilet mirrors were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, often embellished with boxwood or satinwood stringing. Construction techniques relied on hand-cut dovetail joints for the base drawers, hand-turned timber posts, and silvered glass mirror plates held by brass fixing knobs.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-cut joinery on drawer casings, weighted timber bases to balance the tilting glass, and period-appropriate brass or wood side hardware. Looking behind the frame will often reveal hand-planed backing boards and natural timber oxidisation around the structural joints.

Position the mirror on top of a contemporary console table or chest of drawers to create a dedicated dressing station in a bedroom or dressing room. Juxtaposing the rich tones of dark mahogany against contemporary neutral walls or stone surfaces balances historical craftsmanship with modern aesthetics.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish annually, buffing along the wood grain. Avoid spraying chemical glass cleaner directly onto the glass plate, as liquid seepage around the rebate can damage the silver backing and the surrounding finish.
