A splendid William IV period rosewood sewing, or work, table. Of fine construction in solid rosewood and with attractive rosewood veneers and of generous proportions. The square top sits over a pull out drawer fitted with a deep bag. The bag is upholstered in pleated cream coloured fabric. Sympathetically refinished in our workshops and now offered for sale in excellent condition. With a great colour and patina, ready to go straight into the home. Given the solid , fixed top this table would also serve well as a lamp table.

A William IV work table is a compact piece of furniture produced during the reign of King William IV, between 1830 and 1837. Designed primarily for needlework and embroidery in drawing rooms, these tables feature integrated fabric baskets or wells alongside small storage drawers.

Work tables from this period were crafted using high-grade timber veneers such as rosewood and mahogany over oak or pine carcases. The work wells were lined with pleated silk, satin, or cotton fabric, while bases were occasionally accented with brass hardware and castors.

Authentic William IV furniture exhibits architectural forms, heavy scroll supports, turned pedestals, and carved acanthus or lotus leaf motifs. Look for period construction hallmarks, including hand-cut dovetails, original veneered timber surfaces, and concealed brass castors under platform feet.

An antique work table functions as an occasional side table beside an armchair or sofa. Its compact footprint makes it suitable for tight alcoves, hallways, or reading nooks where it adds visual contrast against minimalist contemporary decor.
