Three 18th Century Dutch Delft Chargers

18th century
Description

A set of three matched Dutch delftware large plates or chargers dating from the late 18th century, c1780. All three plates are painted with the same design and they look beautiful grouped together on a wall, or standing on a dresser.

All three plates have a thick wire attached for mounting them on the wall. The wires have obviously been there for a long time and don’t seem to be causing damage to the glaze, and as I think they might be tricky to remove without risking damage to the plates we’ve decided to leave them place. The plates can therefore easily be wall mounted, or as the wires are not obtrusive they can stand on a shelf of dresser just as well.

Condition: All three plates have a crack running from the edge towards the centre, which appear to be stable (I am not sure if the hanging wires are helping to held the cracks together a bit) and have various chips to the glaze around the rim, as is common with Delft ware. One plate has more wear to the edges than the other two.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Dutch Delftware is tin-glazed earthenware produced predominantly around Delft in the Netherlands from the 16th century onwards. It is recognisable by its opaque white tin glaze decorated with cobalt blue hand-painted patterns inspired by imported Chinese porcelain.

These items were fashioned from a buff-coloured earthenware clay body coated in an opaque lead-tin oxide glaze. Hand-painted decoration was applied using cobalt blue metal oxide pigments before a final firing process.

Authentic period pieces exhibit a reddish or yellowish clay body visible where the glaze has flaked, a condition known as fritting along the edges. Marks from kiln supports, slight surface pitting, and hand-painted variations in the cobalt blue brushwork also indicate period construction.

A set of Delftware plates can be displayed as a linear or asymmetrical wall grouping using wire plate hangers. They also function well mounted inside open dresser shelves or styled on display ledges alongside minimalist ceramics to contrast historical craft with contemporary forms.

Clean tin-glazed earthenware using a dry, soft microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush to remove dust. Avoid submersing the ceramic in water or using liquid detergents, as moisture can penetrate edge chips and degrade the earthenware body.
