Fred Lawson 1888-1968.A landscape painter.Fred was born at Yeadon,near Leeds.He studied at Dewsbury an Leeds School of Art.On a visit to Wensleydale in 1910 with George Graham,they decided to settle there and shared a studio for several years.Fred married the young Muriel Metcalfe of Leyburn in 1933,who was also a painter. Exhibited at the RA,RI and at numerous exhibitions of local artists.Contributed illustrations to the Dalesman from the first issue and for ten years wrote a monthly feature for the magazine.Illustrated several books,including a number by Dorothy Una Ratcliffe. Travelled in France and Holland ,but most of his work depicts the scenery and life of Wensleydale.One of the most fluent and spontaneous watercolourists of his time ,he was particularly adept at capturing autumnal tints.A book titled ‘ A Painters Life ‘ about the artist has recently been produced by John Duncalfe Grinton is a small village and civil parish in the Yorkshire Dales,North Yorkshire.The stone bridge across the River Swale was widened in the eighteenth century.The River is reputedly the fastest flowing in England,and Grinton is the first point above Richmond where it could normally be forded. ‘Grinton Bridge ,Swaledale,North Yorkshire ‘ signed watercolour ;image size 27.5x37 cms, framed size 45.5x 56 cms.
