Fine 8 Day Walnut Longcase Clock by Burton of Kendal

Description

A fine quality George III period figured walnut cased 8 day longcase clock with rare age of moon lunar calendar and engraved brass and silvered dial by William Burton of Kendal c.1760. The fine quality case with architectural pediment above a moulded cornice, reeded pilasters set either side of the glazed hood door. The slim trunk with figured timber door and crossbanded edges, the top of the door shaped in the style typical of Westmoreland clocks. Reeded quarter columns either side, lay on panel to the base with matching figured veneers and crossbanded edges, canted corners to each side. Sat on a moulded plinth with small ogee bracket feet below. Brass and engraved silvered dial with arcaded design chapter ring and partially engraved centre with ringed winding holes, rare subsidary lunar calendar indicating the moon`s age with original pointer; moon face engraved to the back cock. Original fine quality cut blued steel hands. The 8 day movement with anchor escapement and rack striking on the hour, fully overhauled and working. William Burton of Kendal, born in Ulverston in 1704 and is recorded making clocks in Highgate in 1734, three of his sons following into the trade. A highly regarded and documented maker, he died in 1786. Presented in superb original condition with a rich patina, fully overhauled and working.
