A stunning East Anglian fruitwood and ash ''Button Back'' armchair of unusual form with rush seat, c.1800-1830.The high backed chair has three turned spheres (or ''buttons'') to the top rail; the button back design was a dominant design feature in country chairs from the East Anglian region. The back also has a single turned cross splat, usually found in country chairs from the Oxfordshire region but also known in East Anglian examples. The narrow ring turning incorporated into the underarm supports is a typical turnery signature from the East Anglian region, and the whole is raised upon four turned legs and front rail with wide stay rails, also typical of turner-made chairs in the East Anglian region c.1790-1830.The chair has a little movement in the joints and evidence of historic repairs in areas (most notably the screw repair to the left hand rest).
