Antique Silver Perfume Scent Bottle - Kate Greenaway

19th century
Description

This solid sterling silver perfume bottle is in remarkable condition.

It is clearly hallmarked on the base for London 1885, with the maker's mark of Sampson Mordan. It is wonderfully engraved and decorated by Kate Greenaway. The lid is tight and the internal stopper is present. The gilding inside is also in excellent condition.

Kate Greenaway was a well loved and prolific English Victorian artist and writer, known for her children's book illustrations and most notably her very popular depictions of children in imaginary 18th-century costumes in the Queen Anne style. Born in Hoxton in 1846, she was the daughter of a draughtsman and engraver, John Greenaway. She popularised a style of drawing that is instantly recognisable as hers – delicate watercolours of children with animals and birds in the English countryside. Between 1882 and 1884 Kate Greenaway pictures appeared on Sampson Mordan scent bottles almost always with children in the foreground and a house or church in the background.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised in the late Victorian era, these scent bottles featured delicate pictorial engravings inspired by the nostalgic childrens illustrations of Kate Greenaway, depicting rural scenes and figures.

Victorian scent bottles were commonly made using sterling silver or glass, frequently incorporating an inner ground-glass stopper to prevent perfume evaporation.

Authentic pieces feature official British hallmarkssuch as the lion passant, makers initials, and date letterstamped into the body or inside the silver cap.

These compact decorative items are positioned on vanity trays, inside glazed display cabinets, or atop bedside tables to add historic detailing to modern dressing areas.

Clean the silver exterior using a dedicated silver polishing cloth without harsh chemicals, and handle the internal glass stopper carefully to prevent chipping or binding.
