Portico columns originate from classical Greek and Roman architecture, where they were utilised to support a covered entrance or porch. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Neoclassical, Georgian, and Regency builders adapted these classical forms using native hardwoods and softwoods for residential porticos and entrances.

While classical exterior columns were frequently carved from stone or marble, domestic and interior columns were often constructed from timber such as pine, fir, or oak. Timber columns were typically turned on large lathes, hollowed to prevent splitting, and finished with protective paint layers.

Original timber columns display evidence of historic hand-planing, lathe marks, square-cut iron nails, or wooden peg joinery. Multiple aged layers of paint, natural wood shrinkage along the grain, and historical weather wear at the plinth base also indicate age.
