A Small Antique Anatolian Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

An antique Anatolian design rug 149 cm long by 88 cm wide.

Finely knotted , being by our measurement over 500 knots per square inch.

Three large rectangular guls interspaced centrally with four smaller ones. Typical Anatolian motifs within the surrounding border of stylized flower and geometric patterns. There are subtle differences in the weaving of these patterns as we show in the photographs. Some wear to the edges (compare left to right) and some losses to small patches of the pile.Extremely clean and in our opinion very attractive.

Anatolian rugs originate from the Asia Minor region of modern-day Turkey, representing one of the oldest rug-weaving traditions in the world. They are renowned for geometric motifs, tribal heraldry, and central medallion structures woven by nomadic tribes and village artisans.

Traditional Anatolian rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for both the pile and warp/weft structures, though cotton warp is sometimes used. The dyes are historically derived from natural plant and mineral sources, such as madder root for reds and indigo for blues.

Authentic pieces feature asymmetrical or symmetrical hand-tied knots visible on the underside, with slight variations in tension and pattern consistency. Natural dye variations, known as abrash, create subtle tonal horizontal stripes across the pile that indicate hand-dyeing processes.
