Inscribed From Bill to Harry. Shanghai 1931

This would appeal to anybody with any connections either now or in the past to the Far East, particularly to China or more specifically Shanghai.

History aficionados also would be interested in a case that by the inscription has gives some provenance by way of date, place and western names letting us know expatriates living and probably working in Shanghai at the beginning of the 1930s. A time of change and upheaval was just starting to get under way as the roaring 1920s drew to a close, and a civil war between the Kuomintang and Mao's Communists was taken advantage of by the Japanese to take control of many parts of Manchuria . Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced primarily from the late 19th century through the Art Deco era of the 1920s and 1930s, Chinese export silver blended traditional Eastern motifs, such as dragons and bamboo, with Western functional items tailored for export market demand.

These cases were typically crafted from solid silver or high-grade export silver alloys, often featuring repousse or chased decoration, and frequently lined with a gilded interior vermeil layer to protect contents and prevent metal tarnishing.

Authentic Chinese export silver often features artisan or workshop character marks alongside silver purity stamps, accompanied by hand-chased relief details, distinctive hand-hammered textures, and natural age-related oxidisation in deeper recesses.

Small silver cases function as refined decorative accents when placed atop a stack of art books, displayed inside a glass curiosity cabinet, or repurposed on an office desk to hold modern business cards.

Clean gently using a soft, lint-free cloth and a specialised silver polishing paste, avoiding harsh abrasive chemicals or liquid dip treatments that could strip deliberately patinated areas or delicate interior gilding.
