Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Neoclassical wall sconces are characterised by motifs inspired by classical antiquity, including Greco-Roman figures, acanthus leaves, columns, and urns. Developed in the mid-18th century as a reaction against Rococo excess, this style emphasizes symmetry, clean architectural proportions, and restrained elegance.

Traditional Neoclassical wall lights were primarily cast in bronze or brass and finished with mercury gilding, also known as ormolu. Over time, techniques evolved to include electroplating and gilt lacquer applied over cast metal bases.

Authentic period gilt bronze pieces display sharp chiseled details from hand-chasing, heavy casting weight, and threaded assembly screws on the reverse. The gilding often shows age-appropriate surface oxidisation and soft wear on raised areas, rather than uniform modern paint finishes.

Gilt wall sconces are often mounted in pairs to frame a central element, such as a large oil painting, chimneypiece, or hallway mirror. Their warm metallic lustre provides a sophisticated focal point against both neutral plaster walls and deep, contemporary paint shades.

Clean gilt metal by dusting gently with a soft dry brush or microfiber cloth. Avoid abrasive polishing compounds, chemical solvents, or harsh liquids, which can strip the thin gold layer and damage the original patina.
