Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Louis XVI style furniture incorporates Neoclassical proportions, straight lines, and classical motifs, often combined with Rococo revival curves in 19th-century interpretations. Vernis Martin refers to a specific Japanese-style lacquering technique developed in 18th-century France, characterised by hand-painted romantic or landscape scenes applied to wooden furniture panels.

Traditional French vitrines feature exotic wood veneers such as kingwood, tulipwood, or rosewood, applied over an oak or pine carcass. They are finished with hand-cast gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts, clear bevelled or curved glass panels, and interior silk or damask textile linings.

Authentic pieces exhibit heavy gilt bronze mounts secured with early hand-cut screws rather than modern fixings. Look for hand-painted details on Vernis Martin panels, natural age-related patina on metals, and hand-cut joinery on drawers or interior framework.

A French vitrine serves as a focal point when set against neutral walls in a living room, dining area, or wide hallway. Fill the interior with curated collections, modern ceramics, or leather-bound books to create visual contrast between contemporary decor and traditional craftsmanship.

Dust wood veneers regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply natural beeswax occasionally, avoiding contact with metallic mounts. Gilt bronze mounts should be dusted gently without harsh chemical polished compounds, which can remove original gilding or damage adjacent lacquered surfaces.
