Description

A stunning baluster shaped Kashmiri table lamp, hand painted in the traditional style of the Kashmire area of Northern India. The multi-coloured floral decoration is highlighted with bands of black and gold.

The condition of the lamp is very good, there is very slight rubbing to the base, this is compatible with age and does not affect the appeal. The lamp has been rewired with fabric covered flex and is PAT tested.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Kashmiri papier-mache is a traditional decorative craft originating in the Kashmir valley during the 15th century, heavily influenced by Persian artisans. It involves moulding paper pulp into shapes and hand-painting intricate floral or foliage motifs using pigments and lacquer finishes.

These lamps feature a moulded papier-mache or turned wood core coated with a smooth layer of plaster or gypsum. They are hand-painted using natural mineral pigments and metallic gold leaf, then finished with a protective coat of clear varnish or lacquer.

Authentic pieces display detailed hand-painted brushwork with subtle variations, fine surface crazing in the lacquer from age, and dense traditional floral patterns known as hazara. The core structure is lightweight compared to solid metal or ceramic reproductions.

Position the lamp base on a dark wood console table or sideboard to allow the gold leaf detailing to catch ambient light. Pair it with a plain silk or linen lamp shade to balance the elaborate hand-painted patterns.

Dust the surface regularly using a dry microfibre cloth to prevent micro-abrasions on the lacquer. Keep the lamp away from direct heat sources, high humidity, and liquid cleaners to prevent the painted surface from peeling or clouding.
