Graceful Elegant 1920s Modernist French Floral Still Life Flowers by the Window Oil on Board

1900 - 1920
Description

There are some artists whose paintings I am always looking for, because they are constantly satisfying. Bruno Francisque Guillermin (1878-1947) is one of them. The artist has a very distinctive style: refined and elegant, there is is a dreamlike haziness to his work. Guillermin is renowned for the distinctive cool light in his flower paintings, which creates a fascinating juxtaposition to the warmth of the subject matter. It gives his painting a timeless quality and a feeling of modernity. I particularly love the composition in this one: the simple sunlit room, the modernist lines, the view through the window.

Guillermin forged his career in Lyons, France's great industrial city at the beginning of the 20th Century, where he worked as a designer in the thriving art deco and textile workships, as well as an artist.

He decorated the ceiling of the emblematic art deco Brasserie Georges in Lyons, as well as the dome and one of the chapels of the Notre-Dame de Fourvière Basilica. He received the Prize of the Fine Arts Society of Lyons, destined to reward the artwork exhibited an the Salon which was deemed to have the most merit, and was a member of the National Fine Arts Society in Paris.

Our painting, dating from the 1920s, is an oil on board signed at the lower left and measures 41 x 32 cm.

In a frame by French master framers Delf, the overall size is 53 x 45 cm.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 1920s, French modernist artists frequently moved away from strict realism, incorporating soft impressionistic brushwork, simplified geometric forms, and muted colour palettes to capture intimate interior floral scenes.

Artists during this period commonly applied oil pigments directly onto rigid wooden boards or stretched canvas panels, which were subsequently mounted within carved or molded timber frames finished in gold leaf or wash.

Authentic pieces display natural signs of age such as subtle surface craquelure, period-correct framing technique, authentic painterly brushstrokes, and aged wood or canvas on the reverse.

Position the artwork above a console table, sideboard, or mantelpiece to create a focal point, pairing framed classical art with modern minimalist lines to balance contemporary and historical aesthetic elements.

Remove surface dust using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoid displaying the painting in direct sunlight or environments with variable humidity, and seek guidance from a professional conservator for pigment restoration.
