Originating in France, a border mirror (miroir a parcloses) features a primary central mirror plate surrounded by smaller marginal glass sections framed in carved mouldings. This structural design allowed craftsmen to create expansive reflective surfaces during periods when producing single large sheets of mirror glass was technically complex.

Mid-nineteenth-century French mirrors were constructed using carved softwood frames coated in layers of gesso and finished with water-gilded gold leaf. The reflective panels were made of silvered glass, which naturally develops subtle foxing and tone variation over time.
