Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A trumeau mirror originally referred to a wall mirror set into the wooden panelling between windows or above a mantelpiece, originating in 18th-century France. These pieces typically feature reflective glass paired with an ornate carved or painted header panel.

Traditional construction features hand-carved pine or lime wood frames, finished with gesso and genuine gold leaf gilding. Mirror plates from the 19th century typically utilized mercury or silvering methods behind original float glass.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved wood joinery beneath the gilt finish, natural oxidation or foxing on the reflective glass, and aged gesso showing faint surface cracking known as craquelure. The back boards are typically hand-sawn softwood secured with period fasteners.

Position a large trumeau mirror above a fireplace mantel or contemporary console table to create an architectural focal point. The historic carved detailing provides contrast against plain modern walls and neutral colour schemes.

Dust the gilded frame regularly using a soft dry brush, avoiding water or chemical sprays that can dissolve gesso and gold leaf. Clean the mirror glass carefully with a lightly damp microfiber cloth, preventing moisture from touching the frame edges.
