Antique 1919 Sterling Silver Jewellery Box

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Beeches Vintage
Description

Here we have a beautiful Antique Silver Jewellery or Rings Box from the early 1900s. It would be ideal to store a few items of jewellery such as rings, earrings or small pendant necklaces.

It comes in a gift bag and would be a fantastic present.

It was made by Synyer and Beddoes and it was Hallmarked in Birmingham in 1919.

It’s made of Sterling Silver with a pretty pattern around the edge of the lid. In the centre of the lid it has Cricklewood, Long Jump (over 14), 1921. Cricklewood is an area of London and it would’ve been given as a prize for an athletics competition which all adds to the charm and history of the box.

It stands on four elegant legs. The lid lifts to show a blue/purple velvet interior and a gilded inner lid.

The Silver is shiny with some tarnish, particularly on the legs which helps to show the beautiful detailing. The hinge works well but has a very slight split to the Silver where it attaches to the box. It is secure and wouldn’t affect its use. The lid shuts but doesn’t sit completely flush with the base. The velvet lining is worn in places as you’d expect for an antique item.

It weighs 89g.

It measures 8.8cm by 5.7cm (3 3/8 inches by 2 1/4 inches). The height measures 4.4cm (nearly 1 3/4 inches).

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Silver jewellery boxes became widespread during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras as essential accessories for dressing tables. Designed to store small personal items such as rings and cufflinks, these caskets reflected prevailing decorative movements through precise metalwork and stylized feet.

These boxes were primarily constructed from hallmarked sterling silver, containing 92.5 per cent pure silver alloyed with copper for structural rigidity. The interiors were typically lined with velvet, silk, or leather to cushion contents and prevent tarnish.

Authenticity is verified via official assay hallmarks stamped into the metal, which denote silver purity, town of origin, makers mark, and date letter. Genuine antique examples also feature period-appropriate hand-chased borders, soldered joints, and natural age-related oxidisation.

An antique silver casket functions as a refined accent when placed on a bedside table, dressing table, or vanity tray. The reflective metal surface creates an appealing contrast alongside natural timber, polished stone, or modern ceramics.

Dust silver regularly using a soft microfibre cloth and polish gently with a specialized silver polishing cloth to remove tarnish. Avoid dipping liquids or abrasive cleaners, which can strip historic patination and damage internal linings.
