Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bureau bookcase is a dual-purpose piece of cabinet furniture combining a fall-front writing desk at the base with a tall cabinet or bookcase above. Originating in the late seventeenth century, these pieces became prominent fixtures in eighteenth-century libraries and drawing rooms.

These pieces typically feature figure-rich burr walnut or straight-grained walnut veneers applied over solid pine or oak carcases. Original period features often include mercury-silvered glass mirror plates, hand-cut dovetail joints, and cast brass handles.

Authentic eighteenth-century examples exhibit hand-sawn timber construction, irregular dovetail joints, and period-correct hardware with original retaining nuts. The presence of secondary woods like pine or oak, alongside natural age-related shrinkage splits in the veneer, further indicates period authenticity.

Position the unit against a neutral backdrop to highlight the natural figure of the walnut grain. Integrate contemporary table lighting or modern ceramics nearby to create a sophisticated balance between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Keep the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and veneer bleaching. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish twice a year using a soft cloth, following the grain of the wood, and clean mirror plates with a dry microfibre cloth.
