Summer Landscape - Antique Oil Painting

19th century
Description

Oil on panel bu the Belgium artist Alfred Bastien (1873 - 1955). The panel is in excellent condition and shows a tree lined road with a farm in the distance. It is signed by the artist.

Alfred Bastien was a Belgian artist, born in Ixelles in 1873 and died in Uccle in 1955. He was a painter and draftsman. He was educated at the Academy in Ghent, under the direction of J. Delvin, and at the Academy in Brussels, under the direction of J. Portaels.

Bastien was co-founder of the Circle Le Sillon in 1893. In 1897 he won the Godecharle Prize. He stayed in Paris with his friends M. Wagemans, F. Smeers and M. Blieck. There he became fascinated by Delacroix and Courbet. He was a realistic painter of landscapes, forest scenes, figures, nudes, portraits, marines, genre scenes, battle scenes, still lifes, flowers and monumental decorative canvases. His realistic style gradually freed itself from the sharp contours and his color palette gradually became brighter.

He traveled to Egypt, England, Algeria, Congo and crossed the Sahara. Together with Ch. Leonard and Ph. Swyncop, he painted the monumental Yser Panorama for King Albert I (1919-1920). He was related to the painters of the Rood Klooster and often painted in the Sonian Forest. From 1927 to 1947 he was a teacher and for several years director at the Academy in Brussels. Work by Alfred Bastien can be found in the Museums in Brussels, Ixelles and Antwerp, among others. He is also mentioned in BAS I, II and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian painters. (piron)

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Impressionist landscape painting focuses on capturing light, atmospheric conditions, and outdoor scenes through visible brushwork, open composition, and a varied colour palette rather than precise details.

Traditional oil paintings were created using ground mineral pigments bound with linseed, walnut, or poppyseed oil, applied onto stretched linen canvas, cotton duck, or solid wood panels.

Authentic period paintings often exhibit natural craquelure across the paint surface, age-appropriate oxidisation on the reverse of the panel or canvas, and hand-applied signature details.

Antique landscape paintings can be hung above a console table or sideboard, paired with minimalist contemporary furniture to create contrast, or integrated into a gallery wall.

Oil paintings should be kept away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and heat sources, and dusted gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush without moisture or chemical cleaners.
