Joshua Anderson Hague Oil on Canvas

19th century
Description

Joshua Anderson Hague RI, RBA, PRCA 1850-1916

A meadow in summer time with cattle grazing and summer flowers in the foreground.

Joshua Anderson Hague is recognized as an important Victorian painter of scenery in the Welsh countryside. Anderson's landscape paintings were remarkable for their portrayal of the natural beauty surrounding the Conwy Valley, with picturesque skies, streams, fields, cottages and seascapes. He and his fellow artists were derided as the "Manchester School" because of their use of a palette knife to apply paint thickly on the canvas, instead of brushes.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

British impressionist landscape paintings from the late Victorian era focus on naturalistic light, open-air pastoral scenes, and visible brushwork depicting rural countryside subjects.

These artworks were painted using oil pigments applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, often housed in heavy carved wooden frames coated with plaster gesso and gold leaf gilding.

Authentic pieces generally display age-appropriate craquelure across the paint surface, natural oxidisation on the canvas back, period-correct artist signatures, and original framing methods.

Hang the painting as a focal point above a mantelpiece or sideboard, contrasting the ornate gilt frame against neutral or dark painted walls.

Display the painting away from direct sunlight and heat sources, clean the surface gently with a dry soft brush, and avoid water or liquid chemicals on gilded gesso.
