Description

A fine example of a late nineteenth, early twentieth century quarter chiming mahogany dome top bracket clock by Winterhalder & Hofmeier. The clock has an eight-day triple barrel movement striking both quarters and hours on a range of coiled gongs. The central arched glazed door opens to reveal a matted brass dial with decorative spandrels and silvered Roman numeral chapter ring above which are three subsidiary dials for chime/silent, time regulation and a choice of four or eight gong quarter chimes. The mahogany case has demi-fluted corners, pilasters and brass claw feet with pierced sound frets to each side and encloses a beautifully engineered triple barrel eight-day movement by the quality German maker Winterhalder & Hofmeier. An excellent timekeeper and scarce in this configuration with a wonderful mellow striking tone.

Winterhalder & Hofmeier were considered the finest clockmakers in the Victorian era. The company was established in 1810 by Thomas Winterhalder, and was based in southern Germany's Black Forest region. In 1850, relative and clockmaker, Anton Hofmeier, joined the company and Winterhalder &Hofmeier was born. The movements produced by this firm around the turn of the 20th century are often mistaken for English movements because of their fine quality.

All are clocks are offered with a twelve-month guarantee.

A striking bracket clock is a weight- or spring-driven portable timepiece originally designed during the seventeenth century to mount on a matching wall bracket. By the nineteenth century, the term referred broadly to freestanding, arch-topped table clocks equipped with internal mechanisms that strike the hours and quarters.

Victorian bracket clocks were typically constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut for the external casing. The movements and dial faces comprised cast brass, steel arbors, gilt spandrels, and silvered metal chapter rings.

Authentic Winterhalder & Hofmeier clocks feature movement plates stamped with the makers initials W&H or W&H SCH. The movements are recognised for heavy brass construction, polished steel pinions, and high-grade striking mechanisms manufactured in Schwarzwald, Germany.

Place the clock as a focal element on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or study bookshelf alongside modern textured ceramics or framed artwork to create visual balance between historical craftsman detail and contemporary decor.

Keep the wood case away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent timber shrinkage or veneer lifting. Dust the wooden surfaces with a soft cloth and apply beeswax periodically while ensuring the mechanical movement is professionally serviced every five years.
