Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a decorative wall-mounted mirror originally designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece, popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries to reflect ambient light. Giltwood frames feature timber carved with decorative motifs and coated with layers of genuine gold leaf.

Traditional giltwood frames were carved from timber such as pine or lime, layered with gesso, and finished using water or oil gilding with thin gold leaf sheets. The mirror plates were often backed with silver or mercury reflective coatings onto hand-blown glass.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit natural wear, such as subtle rubbing of the gold leaf revealing red or grey bole beneath, alongside hand-carved joinery on the timber backboards. Modern reproductions typically feature molded resin compositions and uniform synthetic paint finishes.

Positioning an ornate giltwood mirror above a contemporary fireplace or neutral console table creates a focal point that bridges period detail with modern aesthetics. Combining metallic gilded textures with muted wall colours highlights the carved relief detailing.

Lightly dust the gilded frame using a soft, dry feather duster or dry microfibre brush, avoiding water or chemical sprays that dissolve traditional water gilding. Apply glass cleaner directly to a cloth rather than the mirror surface to prevent moisture seeping behind the frame.
