Joshua Harrocks of Lancaster Longcase Clock

18th century
Description

A fine George III oak and mahogany cross banded longcase clock with engraved brass dial by highly regarded Lancaster maker Joshua Harrocks c.1750. The superior quality figured oak case with mahogany trim to the hood top and pilasters, matching crossbanded edges to the saddle top door and base; original hand floated glass to the hood door. The brass dial with engraved chapter ring, crescent shaped calendar and circular inset panel bearing the makers name Joshua Harrocks, Lancaster. Matted dial centre and decorative cast spandrels to the corners; ringed dummy winding holes and original blued steel hands. The 30 hour movement with bell striking on the hour. Joshua Harrocks of Lancaster was known to be working in the city between 1746 and 1786, he is recorded as buying many of his clock cases from Gillows workshops, we believe that this example would have come from there. He had the honour of being commissioned to build a clock for the new turret at Lancaster Priory in 1759 and wound the clock for 10 years after that for a fee of £1 per annum (ref Clockmakers North Lancashire, Susan E Stuart). Small proportion and presented in superb original condition with a wonderful colour and original patina, fully serviced and working. Measures 79" high x 22" wide at the cornice x 13.5" trunk width x 9" deep at the foot. A video of the clock striking is available at https://youtube.com/shorts/wwTav3MmVSc

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
