A fine etching in black ink on cream wove paper. Framed and glazed. Inscribed by the artist in pencil below the plate from left to right; No.5 of 100 – ‘The Cheap-Jack’ – To my friend Leslie M. Ward with best wishes from E. Hesketh Hubbard.
 
A market trader or seller of cheap inferior goods was commonly referred to as a cheap-jack or hawker.

E. H Hubbard was a painter, printmaker, furniture designer, printer, writer and lecturer. Born in London, Eric studied at Heatherley’s School of Fine Art, Croydon School of Art and Chelsea Polytechnic. He was founder and director of the Forest Press and for a time master of the Art Workers’ Guild; and the author of over a dozen books, including A Hundred Years of British Painting 1851–1951. He was a member of many societies connected with painting and printmaking in Britain and overseas. He exhibited widely, including ROI, RSA, RA, RBA and Ridley Art Club. Many galleries in Britain and abroad hold his work. Lived in London.
